An innovative new wood and furniture testing centre has recently been officially opened in Ghana by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) with the support of the Swiss government and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). The centre is located at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) - Forestry Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) in Fumesua in the Ashanti region and aims to promote trade and industrialisation.

The Wood and Furniture Testing Centre (WFTC) is the first of its kind in the West African sub-region and the third in Africa, after Egypt and South Africa, to enable Ghanaian and imported timber and furniture products to be tested for compliance with the required commercial standards. Businesses in the wood industry can now carry out tests to determine the strength of the materials used in the manufacture of wood products, including the bonding quality of plywood, as well as the durability, stability and strength of tables and chairs. The durability of wood products and their functionality are tested with the aim of ensuring sustainable wood products on the Ghanaian and global market.

Hegewald & Peschke offers a large selection of suitable test solutions for these tests. For example, the Wood and Furniture Testing Centre will now be equipped with a test bench for tables and chairs, a double flexure test bench, an armrest test bench, a portal for drop test testing, a pendulum impact test and a test bench for determining stability.

The Dutch Graidco B.V. (Global Relief Aid and Development Company), which specialises in the implementation of projects in developing and emerging countries, acted as local system integrator.
