BIFMA X5.1 – An overview of the test standard for office chairs

BIFMA X5.1 is an internationally recognised test standard for evaluating the safety, durability and structural stability of office chairs. Developed by the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association (BIFMA), it sets comprehensive test requirements for the everyday use of seating furniture in offices.

Whether load tests, durability tests or functional tests – the BIFMA X5.1 standard forms the basis for standardised and comparable test procedures worldwide. Manufacturers, testing laboratories and quality departments use this standard to ensure that a chair meets the high requirements for service life, safety and comfort in everyday office use.

Standardised testing in accordance with BIFMA X5.1 allows safety-related weaknesses to be identified at an early stage. This minimises the risk of product complaints and at the same time increases the confidence of customers, dealers and certification bodies.

Typical tests according to BIFMA X5.1:

  • Load capacity of seat, backrest and armrests
  • Continuous load on the gas spring and mechanism
  • Testing of castors and base (e.g. Caster Base Durability Test, Section 16)
  • Stability and tilt tests
  • Functional tests with repeated adjustment

Whether chair castor testing, armrest loading, backrest function or durability – the systems enable precise and standard-compliant execution of all tests. Thanks to their modular design, test fields can be flexibly adapted to individual requirements and test standards – ideal for test and development laboratories in the furniture industry.
