Particularly against the background of the current discussion about the reduction of packaging waste, especially plastic and plastic waste, other "raw materials" are once again moving more into the spotlight: recyclable fibre materials such as cardboard and paper. In order to meet the future requirements of the packaging industry, e.g. in the food sector, a continuous improvement in the understanding of materials is necessary. The Paper Technology Foundation (PTS) is a research and service institute based in Heidenau near Dresden, Germany. Its activities include the development of new specialty papers, packaging with new functions and improving the printability of paper webs. In order to achieve these goals, research is being carried out into fibre-based solutions.

To implement an extensive research programme for fibre-based materials, PTS has now acquired a test system consisting of a special version of a universal testing machine Inspekt 20kN from Hegewald & Peschke with test speeds of up to 3,000 mm/min including a climatic chamber for tests under the influence of temperature and humidity.

The purchase of the two devices was realized within the framework of the INNO-KOM investment grant "IK-IZ 180004" funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy (BMWi).

For example, the testing machine is to be used to carry out tests in which the climate and speed dependency of the material constants of paper and cardboard is determined. These parameters are subject to large fluctuations due to the hygroscopic and viscoelastic behaviour of the material.

Also important for the packaging industry and feasible with this test system is the investigation of the flexural and buckling stiffness of cardboard. Finally, the test system also enables peel and separation tests to determine the adhesive force and adhesive sliding friction.

In addition to tensile, compression, bending and shear tests, hysteresis tests are planned to determine the creep behaviour of corrugated and solid board. Creep in the case of materials refers to a behaviour that describes plastic, i.e. permanent and irreversible deformation under constant force. This deformation is dependent on time and temperature influence.
