Whether storm, frost, or heat—roof waterproofing membranes must provide lasting, reliable protection against moisture. To ensure that they can withstand high environmental stresses in the long term, they are subjected to rigorous material testing. Hegewald & Peschke offers customized testing systems that test bitumen membranes reliably and in accordance with standards—including for their strength and tear resistance.
Precise testing technology for standard-compliant results
A universal testing machine inspekt solo-M with a maximum test force of 2.5 kN is being used in a current project. It is equipped with screw type grips and a special device for determining tear resistance (nail test). With a test space height of 1075 mm, the machine is optimally designed for the sample dimensions specified in the standard. The machine allows freely selectable control of crosshead travel, force, or strain and delivers precise measurement results thanks to the high-precision strain gauge load cell.
Testing of tear resistance according to EN 12310-1
The EN 12310-1 standard describes the test procedure for determining the tear resistance (nail test) of waterproofing membranes. A standardized notch is made in the sample material, which is then loaded with a test mandrel. The special test device for determining tear resistance is designed for a maximum force of 2 kN and is therefore tailored to the typical stresses on the materials. During the material test, the inspekt solo-M precisely records the force required for tearing – a key parameter for assessing the mechanical load-bearing capacity of sealing membranes.
Tensile test according to EN 12311-1
The EN 12311-1 standard specifies methods for determining the tensile behavior of bituminous membranes under uniaxial loading. The test specimens are clamped in the testing machine using a screw type grip, which ensures fast, convenient, and secure clamping. The test is carried out over a defined clamping length and at a constant test speed. The elongation and maximum tensile force are measured, which allows conclusions to be drawn about the elastic behavior and breaking strength of the material.
Roofing membranes are used in numerous areas of the construction industry: they seal flat and green roofs, protect bridges, tunnels, and parking decks, and thus ensure the longevity and safety of structures.
In order to simulate real-life conditions in a practical manner, Hegewald & Peschke also offers specialized testing systems with temperature control and climate chambers. In combination with temperature-resistant grips, testing tools, and the appropriate components for the load train, customized complete solutions for material testing under defined environmental conditions are created.
