Torsion modules

Torsion modules are modular torsion drives that are installed in the universal testing machine. They are used to carry out torsion tests, which are an essential test procedure in many branches of industry for determining the application-specific properties of materials and components. The areas of application here are diverse; for example, angle of rotation measurements can be carried out over a defined torque range.

Areas of application for torsion drives

Beside tests in the context of conventional materials engineering torsion tests are used to examine components and final goods in different industrial sectors:

  • Medical technology, e.g. testing of the dosing mechanism of insulin-pens
  • Electrical engineering, e.g. testing  of rotary switches (switch pulse/cycle of operation) or slip ring testing
  • Office supplies, e.g. testing of the rotation mechanism of ball pens
  • Household appliance, e.g. testing of pepper mills
  • Tools, e.g. fatigue testing of drills
  • Food industry, e.g. testing of packaging with screw closure

Advantages

The torsion modules have a modular design, i.e. they can be quickly and easily installed and removed from the universal testing machine. Equipped with a torsion drive, the testing machines can therefore be used for uniaxial or biaxial tests (tension or compression combined with torsion).

The modules for torsion loading have their own control system. These features mean that the testing machine can also be used for normal tensile, compression and bending tests and the module is only adapted when torsion loading is required. The two axes are operated in master-slave mode, but can also be used independently. The complex software requirements are met by Hegewald & Peschke MPT GmbH's in-house LabMaster testing software.

Additional accessories such as grips can be coupled to the torsion drive via a standardized connection.

Mechanical construction

The torsion module consists of a base plate, on which the drive and output are mounted. For the operation of the module a tension-torsion-sensor is necessary in addition to the universal testing machine and grip. This sensor simultaneously detects the compression/tensile load and the torque, whereat both measuring channels are separately evaluable.

Hegewald & Peschke also offers special testing machines for torsion testing for applying torque loads to samples made of different materials during static tests:
