Universal testing machine Inspekt table blue 20kN with squeezing device

Innovative biomaterials, such as bone cements, bone implants, as well as substitute materials make an important contribution to improving the quality of life of affected patients. Before these products can be used in the context of medical treatment, they must undergo strict quality controls.

This includes, for example, random compressive strength tests on bone cements. These are used in medical technology as synthetic substitute materials and must have very high strength as well as resistance to deformation, fracture and failure. The results of the tests also allow conclusions to be drawn about the material composition, as this is decisive for the resilience of the end product.

To carry out the test procedure, small samples are first cast from cement. After curing, these are clamped in the Inspekt table blue 20kN testing machine and subjected to a steadily increasing pressure of up to 20 KN. The determined pressure curve allows conclusions to be drawn about the strength and material composition.

This mechanical test method is characterised by its ability to measure a wide variety of samples very quickly and comparatively easily. The test specifications are closely aligned with practical requirements. Bone cement is unique in its special composition, strength and applicability. Especially in the fields of orthopaedics, trauma and neurosurgery as well as oral and maxillofacial surgery and dentistry, the demand for bone substitute materials with high functionality and regeneration-promoting properties is growing. Added to this are the requirements for ease of use and compatibility with the methods of minimally invasive surgery.

Squeeze tests on syringes

The bone cement is delivered to the customer already filled in special syringes. The material does not need to be mixed before an operation. It only hardens when it comes into contact with body fluid. The bone cement in the syringe has a viscous consistency and has to be squeezed out through cannulas of different diameters. So-called expression tests are carried out for this purpose on the new machine from Hegewald & Peschke MPT GmbH. In the course of various tests, it is determined at which cannula diameter and which consistency the cement can be expressed in a particularly user-friendly way.
