Testing the shear forces of contact elements

The testing of circuit breakers and other contact elements is used for quality assurance in the electrical industry. Shear tests are used to determine whether the solder contacts between the switching contact and the component can withstand the high mechanical loads to which they are exposed in practice, often with many millions of switching cycles. 

Carrying out the shear test

  1. Clamping the specimen:
    • The component is clamped in a special shear fixture.
  2. Applying the shear load:
    • Steadily increasing shear load is applied until the switching contact is sheared off.
  3. Automated testing process:
    • The contact strip is inserted into the test slide and pushed into the testing machine.
    • A sensor detects the position and starts the test automatically.
    • The safety door closes to secure the test process.
    • The special tool carries out the shearing tests.
    • On completion, the safety door opens and the sample can be removed.
  4. Data acquisition and quality assurance
    • The maximum force determined is transferred to the production database.
    • Comparison with internal factory tolerances to ensure consistent quality.
    • If values are outside the tolerance ranges, production can be adjusted directly.
    • Reduction of material and resource consumption through early fault detection.
