Testing of springs

Metal springs are crucial for the function of many mechanical and mechatronic systems. They deform specifically under load and return to their original shape after being relieved. To ensure that they work reliably, their properties must be tested precisely.

The most important properties of a spring are:

  • Spring force - How much force a spring can apply
  • Spring travel - How far the spring moves under load
  • Spring work - The energy that the spring can store and release
  • Spring characteristic curve - The relationship between spring force and spring travel (linear, progressive, degressive or combined)

These characteristic values are determined by material tests in order to design the spring optimally for its intended use. Hegewald & Peschke offers various testing systems for the precise analysis of springs.

The compression plates are available with different capacities and for different specimen dimensions, e.g.:

  • Capacity: 20 kN*
  • Specimen dimensions compression springs:
    • D= 4 – 87 mm*
    • Max. spring length 100 – 300 mm*
  • Dimension/design: round Ø 150 mm*, 2x rigid / steel hardened 60 HRC, black oxide

Note: The test setup for spring testing requires the load cell to be mounted on the lower fixed crosshead of the universal testing machine. The respective pin is mounted to the lower compression plate.

Determining the spring rate for spring rods

    • centric through-hole in the lower crosshead - possibility of testing very long springs
    • Nominal load of 10 kN - optimally matched to the required test forces

Test method:

  • Precise determination of the spring rate (e.g. when testing window fittings for roof windows)
    • Determines how easy or difficult the window is to open or close
    • Determines whether the window closes tightly

Testing the durability and hardness of spring cores in mattresses

Combined test stand for mattresses

The test system is used for both durability and hardness testing of mattresses and innersprings in accordance with EN 1957 using rollers and load pads.

Durability test:

  • The permanent load is applied by a test roller (static load: 1400±7 N)

Hardness test:

The hardness measuring unit comprises a servoelectromotive test axis.

  • Determination of the hardness value H
  • Determination of the classification of the recumbent hardness Hs on a scale from 1 to 10
  • Determination of hardness loss after X cycles

The ideal testing software for testing springs

Our universal testing machines are equipped with the LabMaster testing software, which enables user-friendly setup and execution of customer-specific test sequences. It ensures fast and reliable determination of relevant characteristic values such as spring force, spring travel, spring constant and spring characteristic curve.

LabMaster can be used to perform both alternating load tests (cyclic load tests) and static tests - made possible by the flexible parameterization of the test sequence via the block program. The test results can be statistically evaluated and displayed in customizable test protocols.

The software also offers a high degree of flexibility when integrating external measuring devices. Data can also be easily imported and exported for customer-specific software such as QDAS or SAP.
