Compression tests on hard foams according to ISO 844
Universal testing machine inspekt table with compression plates
Compression tests on hard foams in accordance with ISO 844 are used to determine mechanical properties such as compressive strength, compression, compressive stress and the compressive modulus. These tests are essential to evaluate the mechanical strength of rigid foams and similar materials and to ensure that they meet the requirements of various applications.
Test procedure and testing system
Testing is carried out using the inspekt table universal testing machine, which is specially equipped for these applications. Precisely manufactured compression plates are used for the compression test. Displacement sensors can optionally be attached to the compression plates in order to measure the deformation of the specimens with high precision during the test.
Details on compression plates
- Capacity and load direction: Compression test up to 150 kN.
- Specimen dimensions:
- Flat specimens with a thickness of 10 to 65 mm.
- Specimen width: 100 x 100 mm.
- Specimen material: Suitable for core composites and other rigid foams.
- Pressure plates:
- Upper compression plate: Diameter 196 mm, made of hardened, nickel-plated steel.
- Lower compression plate: Diameter 166 mm, also made of hardened, nickel-plated steel.
- With concentric circles for optimum specimen centering.
Optional accessories include displacement transducers (item no.: 15-013-431), which enable precise deformation measurement, as well as a data acquisition card for extended evaluations.
Compression tests on hard foams with the LabMaster testing software
The LabMaster testing software is a powerful tool for in-depth analysis, such as determining the modulus of elasticity in accordance with ISO 844:
- The modulus of elasticity is determined using the tangent method, whereby the number of segments can be adjusted (six as standard according to the standard).
- The function is available after activation under special functions in the print module.
Conclusion
The compression test on rigid foams in accordance with ISO 844 is particularly suitable for applications where mechanical stability and accuracy are of central importance, for example when evaluating core composites or insulation materials. The test configuration can be flexibly adapted to specific requirements.
