An inspekt 100 kN universal testing machine is used for quality assurance of plastic materials and medical components. Among other things, it is equipped with a temperature chamber to carry out material and component tests under realistic ambient conditions.

Plastic tensile tests according to ISO 527-1

An important part of the tests is the mechanical characterization of plastic raw materials. Tensile tests are carried out in accordance with ISO 527-1 - both under room conditions and at elevated temperatures in the temperature chamber. These tests provide important information about the strength, elasticity and stretchability of the plastics used and enable precise quality control.

Temperature-dependent testing of dialysis filter cartridges

In addition to the material tests, complete dialysis filter cartridges are tested under the influence of temperature. The test sequence is structured as follows:

  1. Preparation:
    • The filter cartridge is run to a specified preload using the block program and the formula editor of the LabMaster testing software.
  2. Heating phase:
    • Once the preload has been reached, the sample is heated in the temperature chamber to a defined temperature ramp.
    • Due to the coefficient of thermal expansion, the filter cartridge expands during heating.
  3. Evaluation:
    • The entire test process is documented by a graphical representation and the recording of raw data.
    • Depending on the test mode, two different tests are possible:
      • Determination of thermal expansion: The change in length of the filter cartridge is measured, with the machine keeping the load constant at 0 N.
      • Strength test under temperature: This tests whether the filter cartridge can withstand a defined load under expansion or whether it will break (displacement = 0 mm).

Tensile tests on filter fibers

In a further test procedure, the individual filter fibers of the cartridge are tested for tensile load. This serves to test the mechanical stability of the fibers, which is crucial for the filtration performance.

By combining different test methods, both the mechanical properties of the starting materials and the behavior of complete medical components can be analyzed under realistic conditions.
