Testing technology for bicycles, bicycle components, and e-bikes

Bicycles and e-bikes are at the heart of modern mobility solutions, whether for everyday use or leisure activities. To meet the growing demands for safety, durability, and comfort, reliable testing procedures throughout the entire development and production process are essential. Hegewald & Peschke offers a wide range of testing systems for the mechanical testing of bicycles and e-bikes as well as their components and materials.

Our solutions range from universal testing machines with extensive accessories to specialized test rigs for component and overall testing to flexible system concepts for fatigue testing, long-term behavior, and overload testing. In this way, we support manufacturers, suppliers, and testing institutes in meeting the highest quality and safety standards, regardless of whether child seats, luggage racks, or complete bicycles and e-bikes are being tested.

Prüfstände für Fahrradrahmen, Komponenten und Zubehör

Our specially developed test rigs for bicycle components enable precise and standard-compliant testing in accordance with all relevant standards, including DIN EN 14344 (child seats) and DIN EN ISO 11243 (luggage racks).

Testing of luggage racks in accordance with DIN EN ISO 11243

Test rigs for bicycle luggage racks

Possible tests:

  • Vertical dynamic test according to DIN EN ISO 11243, section 5.9.3
  • Lateral dynamic test according to DIN EN ISO 11243, section 5.9.4

Test system:

  • Test rig with touch panel and PLC control
    • Setting of cycle number, speed/frequency, stroke, and swivel angle
more

Testing of child seats in accordance with DIN EN 14344

Possible tests:

  • Vertical test according to DIN EN 14344 Section 8.9.3.5.2
  • Side test according to DIN EN 14344 Section 8.9.3.5.3
  • Transverse stiffness test according to DIN EN 14344 paragraph 8.9.3.6

Test system:

  • Various models:
    • Double test rig for vertical, lateral, and transverse stiffness testing
    • Single test rig for vertical testing
    • Single test rig for lateral and transverse stiffness testing
  • Operation via touchscreen with PLC control:
    • Input of target cycle count and any additional test parameters (e.g., swivel angle)
    • Display of set speed and actual cycle count
    • Automatic stop after reaching the target cycle count
more

Tests with universal testing machines

The inspekt table universal testing machine is used in combination with a T-groove plate for fastening to perform mechanical testing of bicycle accessories made of polymers and foams, such as saddles. A compression plate and a peel device are used to apply the load. The system is controlled by the intuitive LabMaster testing software, supplemented by a video recording module that visually documents the test sequences and makes them evaluable.

This system can be used to perform the following tests, among others:

  • Tensile tests in accordance with DIN EN ISO 1798 (polymer foams) and DIN 53504 (elastomers) to determine tear resistance and elongation behavior
  • Compression tests according to ISO 604, ISO 7743, ISO 844, ISO 3386-1 and -2 – optionally also cyclic or with defined force holding and force paths
  • Creep and stress-rupture tests according to DIN EN ISO 10066, ISO 1856, ISO 3384, ISO 8013, and ISO 6914 to evaluate the long-term behavior of materials
  • Peel tests according to ISO 15113 to analyze the adhesive strength of multilayer materials and bonds

Flexible test rigs for individual requirements

With the Calmar pro.2 system, Hegewald & Peschke offers a powerful platform for modular component testing. Pneumatic and electric motor axes can be freely combined for single- and multi-axis applications depending on the application – ideal for:

  • Fatigue testing on frames, forks, handlebars, stems, or seat posts
  • Stiffness measurements and bending tests on handlebar units or frame assemblies
  • Maximum load and overload tests to validate extreme operating conditions
  • Reproducible load cycle tests in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025

The testing systems are compatible with all relevant bicycle standards, including DIN EN ISO 4210, the European standard EN 15194 (for e-bikes/pedelecs), and the new DIN EN 17860. Their high flexibility makes them suitable for both standard testing and individual development tests – whether in the laboratory or in quality assurance.
