Testing the Bond Strength of Dental Crowns and Implants
Universal testing machine inspekt table with a pull-off device
To investigate the bond strength of dental crowns on implants, tests can be conducted using a Universal Testing Machine “inspekt table” from Hegewald & Peschke. For this purpose, the implant is secured in a specially adapted clamping device, and the crown is connected to the load cell via a pull-off device. Under a controlled tensile load, the crown is pulled axially away from the implant until the bond breaks. The maximum pull-off force determined in this process serves as a measure of the bond strength.
As part of such a study, for example, various crowns made of lithium disilicate and monolithic zirconia were bonded to zirconia implants using different cements and then compared with one another in terms of their bond strength.
The inspekt table enables precise and reproducible force measurement. Custom-designed test and pull-off fixtures allow the test setup to be adapted to different implant and crown geometries.
This application demonstrates that universal testing machines, when equipped with the appropriate test fixture, can be used for far more than just classic tensile tests on standardized specimens. Even complex-shaped components such as implants can be tested mechanically with precision and reproducibility. The key to this is the interaction between the testing machine, software, test sequence, and custom-designed test fixture.
