Weld seam testing

Weld seam testing comprises numerous test methods designed to ensure the quality and strength of weld seams. At the heart of these test methods are both destructive and non-destructive testing, which are crucial for evaluating the mechanical-technological properties and therefore for selecting suitable materials.

Mechanical test methods for the evaluation of weld seams

Weld seam testing includes various test methods, such as the tensile tests, which are used in the metalworking industry, among others. These methods provide important characteristic values such as yield strength, tensile and strength in accordance with standards such as EN ISO 6892-1 (for metal tensile tests at room temperature) and EN ISO 5178 for longitudinal tensile tests on weld metal. The fracture test (EN ISO 9017) is also part of the destructive weld seam test and provides important information on possible weak points through the visual inspection of the fracture surfaces.

bending tests and Notched bar impact tests

The notched bar impact test (EN ISO 148-1) also plays a role in the evaluation of weld seams. In this test, the specimen is subjected to a dynamic load that specifically causes a fracture. Equally important is the bending test in accordance with EN ISO 5173, which describes the destructive testing of weld seams on metallic materials.

Summary of the advantages

Weld seam testing enables a comprehensive analysis of material properties and ensures that components perform their function even under extreme conditions. These procedures form the basis for the safe use of welded joints in critical areas such as vehicle construction and mechanical engineering, ship and pipeline construction as well as in medical technology and aviation.
